China Auto Show 2027: Auto Shanghai vs. Beijing Guide
China will host two major auto shows in 2027, just 18 days apart. Beijing opens a specialized themed exhibition on March 27, focused on AI, intelligent driving and automotive manufacturing technology. Auto Shanghai 2027 follows on April 23 as the full-scale show for new-vehicle premieres. For most automakers, Auto Shanghai remains the priority, while chip, battery, sensor and software suppliers may find a more focused stage in Beijing.
The back-to-back schedule is the result of a dispute between the organizers of the two shows, and it reshapes the China auto show 2027 calendar for brands and their agencies. Drawing on what we see on the ground at our Shanghai office, this guide covers the 2027 dates and venues, the background to the change, how the two shows differ and how to decide where to exhibit.

2027 at a Glance
Both events run for 10 days, opening with media days, followed by trade days and then public days. The key difference is format. Auto Shanghai keeps the full-scale motor show, while Beijing’s March event is a themed exhibition built around next-generation automotive technology.
| 2027 | Beijing (March) | Auto Shanghai (April) |
|---|---|---|
| Official Name | 2027 Beijing International New-Quality Automotive and Future Smart Mobility Exhibition | 22nd Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition |
| Dates | March 27 – April 5, 2027 | April 23 – May 2, 2027 |
| Venue | China International Exhibition Center (Shunyi) and Capital International Exhibition & Convention Center (CIECC) | National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC), Shanghai |
| Media Days | March 27–28 | April 23–24 |
| Trade Days | March 29–30 | April 25–26 |
| Public Days | March 31 – April 5 | April 27 – May 2 |
| Notes | Separate parts exhibition, March 27–30 | About 400,000 m² (4.3 million sq ft) planned |
Beijing’s March event is a separate themed exhibition, not Auto China. Auto China, Beijing’s full-scale auto show, stays on its even-year schedule and returns in April 2028.
Why China Has Two Auto Shows in 2027
For more than two decades, China’s two largest auto shows followed a simple rule: Shanghai in odd-numbered years, Beijing in even-numbered years. The 2027 schedule breaks that pattern because of a dispute between the organizations that ran them, the Shanghai Council for the Promotion of International Trade (Shanghai CCPIT) and the Automotive Sub-Council of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT Auto).

Shanghai cited a “material breach of contract” as the reason for ending the partnership but did not disclose details. Industry observers in China have linked the split to revenue sharing, with each edition reportedly worth hundreds of millions of yuan. Beijing ultimately kept a 2027 event but dropped the full motor show format. The alternating rule survives on paper, but in practice, brands will see auto shows in two cities in 2027.
Beijing vs. Shanghai
The two shows now play different roles. Beijing is positioned around technology depth, while Shanghai is built for industry scale.
| 2027 | Beijing (March) | Auto Shanghai (April) |
|---|---|---|
| Theme | New-Quality Vehicles and Future Smart Mobility | Building the Ecosystem Together, Leading an Intelligent Future |
| Core Content | AI, smart factories, robotics, vehicle operating systems, automotive chips | World premieres, physical AI, intelligent driving |
| Presentation | Technology demonstrations | New-vehicle launches |
| Best For | Technology exchange, B2B meetings, partner discovery | Vehicle reveals, brand awareness, PR, consumer reach |
Beijing’s March program extends beyond finished vehicles to manufacturing and enabling technology: AI, intelligent driving, smart cockpits, vehicle operating systems, core EV components, smart factories and robotics. A separate parts exhibition runs March 27–30, alongside the media and trade days.
Auto Shanghai remains the main stage for world premieres, and it is expanding into robotics, physical AI and hardware. The 2027 show is expected to add its first embodied AI zone, and organizers are planning public programs around the May Day holiday, which overlaps with the show’s public days. Details are available on the official Auto Shanghai website.

How Big Are China’s Auto Shows?
Both shows operate at a scale few auto shows anywhere can match. By floor area, Auto China 2026 was the largest auto show in the world. The most recent full-scale editions compare as follows.
| Edition | Auto Shanghai 2025 | Auto China 2026 (Beijing) |
|---|---|---|
| Exhibition Area | 360,000 m² (3.9 million sq ft) | 380,000 m² (4.1 million sq ft) |
| Visitors | 1.01 million (63,000 international) | 1.28 million (65,000 international) |
| Vehicles on Display | 1,366 | 1,451 |
| World Premieres | 163 | 181 |
| Press Conferences | 193 | 219 |
Over roughly ten days, each show hosts around 200 press conferences, most of them packed into the two media days. That density shapes every planning decision, from the launch time slot to how a booth reads from the aisle when hundreds of brands are competing for the same cameras on the same day.
How China Compares with Europe and the US
China’s auto shows now draw about twice the visitors of the biggest shows in Europe and the US. In Europe, where the format is usually called a motor show, IAA Mobility in Munich and the Paris Motor Show (Mondial de l’Auto) each drew around 500,000 visitors at their latest editions. The Geneva International Motor Show, long a key launch stage for European automakers, ended its Swiss run after 2024. In the US, the Detroit Auto Show drew more than 275,000 visitors in 2025.
| Show | City | Edition | Visitors |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto China | Beijing | April 2026 | 1.28 million |
| Auto Shanghai | Shanghai | April 2025 | 1.01 million |
| Paris Motor Show | Paris | October 2024 | 508,000 |
| IAA Mobility | Munich | September 2025 | 500,000+ |
| Detroit Auto Show | Detroit | January 2025 | 275,000+ |
For a global brand, that gap matters. A launch in Shanghai or Beijing reaches a larger live audience in ten days than any European motor show or US auto show, and puts it on the same floor as nearly every major Chinese automaker.
Which Show Fits Your Brand?
Automakers: Auto Shanghai First
For vehicle brands, Auto Shanghai is the clear priority in 2027. Chinese media expect Beijing’s themed exhibition to fall short of a full-scale motor show in publicity and media attention, and Shanghai is where world premieres, press conferences and consumer traffic will concentrate. A 2027 launch in China starts with a media-day slot and a booth built around the reveal.
Suppliers: Consider Beijing
For automotive semiconductor, battery, sensor, autonomous driving and software companies, Beijing may be the better opportunity. Away from the competition of large-scale vehicle launches, suppliers can present their technology to an audience that came for exactly that. The format favors B2B meetings and partner discovery over consumer reach.
A technology show still needs more than a list of specs. Interactive demonstrations and technology storytelling are likely to set the strongest booths apart. Xiaomi’s exploded chassis display is a useful reference: it turns engineering into something visitors can walk around and understand in seconds.

Exhibiting at Both
Brands planning to appear at both shows face a tight turnaround. The Beijing event closes on April 5, less than three weeks before Shanghai’s media days begin. Modular booth elements, shared content and a single production team can reduce cost and risk, but each show still needs its own message: technology depth in Beijing, product and brand in Shanghai.
Exhibitor lists and detailed layouts for 2027 will be announced later. Teams preparing to exhibit should keep track of official participation notices, venue regulations and the plans of major brands as they are released.
Working with a Local Partner
China’s auto shows move quickly. Rules, schedules and the on-site atmosphere can change from one edition to the next, as the 2027 calendar shows, and the teams that hear about those changes first are in the best position to respond.
A global auto show is a complex project in which several disciplines run at once: booth design, fabrication, equipment sourcing, media content, stage direction and on-site operations. In China, exhibitors also have to manage local venue regulations, communication with fabricators, logistics and installation schedules, and technical infrastructure.
At EIDETIC, we run a local office in Shanghai, so our team handles venue communication, technical security and logistics on the ground. We have worked on new-vehicle launches and motor show projects for automotive brands including Lynk & Co, founded by Geely and Volvo Cars, and ZEEKR, Geely’s premium EV brand. From planning and spatial design to media content, stage direction, production management and on-site operations, one in-house team sees each project through.

A Kinetic LED Reveal for a Flagship SUV
Our China team delivered the ZEEKR 8X launch end to end, from creative planning and spatial design to production, stage direction and on-site operations. Moving LED structures opened to introduce the SUV on a 54 m × 13 m (177 ft × 43 ft) panoramic kinetic screen built from 2,808 LED panels.
Event footprint: 7,000 m² (75,347 sq ft) · Attendees: 1,300+ · Result: 10,000 pre-orders within 30 minutes of the launch
Wuling Motors: A 360-Degree Stage for the Mini EV
For SAIC-GM-Wuling at Auto Shanghai 2021, we built a 360-degree stage at the center of the booth to give the Hongguang Mini EV maximum exposure from every aisle. Individual stools and a unified brand color across the presentation and videos reflected the car’s young, free-spirited concept.
Our scope: event marketing planning, creative strategy and design, interactive media content.
We also planned and directed the Lynk & Co 900 launch on a 90 m × 8 m (295 ft × 26 ft) panoramic LED stage, as well as the Lynk & Co 07 EM-P media launch in Beijing, which followed the model’s debut at the 2024 Beijing auto show. You can see more of the ZEEKR 8X launch and our Wuling Motors booth at Auto Shanghai in our portfolio.
Back-to-back auto shows in Beijing and Shanghai show how fast China’s auto industry is changing and expanding. The 2027 season will be worth watching for which brands appear, how automotive marketing evolves and where new opportunities emerge.
China Auto Show FAQs
Beijing’s specialized themed exhibition runs March 27 – April 5, 2027 at the China International Exhibition Center (Shunyi) and CIECC. Auto Shanghai 2027 runs April 23 – May 2, 2027 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai. Both shows open with two media days.
Most automakers will prioritize Auto Shanghai, the full-scale show for world premieres and media coverage. Beijing’s March exhibition is better suited to chip, battery, sensor, autonomous driving and software companies looking for B2B meetings and technology partners.
Plan the press conference slot around the media days, confirm venue rules and approvals early, and line up local fabrication, logistics and technical infrastructure. With around 200 press conferences per show, interactive demonstrations and a clear brand story matter more than spec lists.
From our Shanghai office, we plan and deliver auto show booths, new-vehicle launches and on-site operations for automotive brands. One team handles strategy, spatial design, media content, stage direction and production, from the first idea to the last day on the show floor.
